Hi all, 

These are the Bring-your-own weekly classes.

This term, the online weekly classes will be held via zoom and the recordings will be stored on new private facebook pages.  This way you can not only watch back the recordings, but you can ask questions and share images in the groups.  

The zoom links will be stored on the facebook pages and can also be found in the members section under "my bookings"

Ingredients and Equipment - Will be updated by 26th July

 

Each week please check the list for your class to see the ingredient and equipment required, these are only suggestions as you may have tools or ingredients that you would prefer to use

but please assume that

Each week you need the following basic tools: -

New to cakes? Scroll down to the bottom of the page for my youtube video about cake tools

Modelling tools set such as PME, to include Dresden, ball tool, bone tool, cone tool, scribe, non stick smooth work board, edible glue and brush, small rolling pin, corn flour puff. kitchen roll, paint palette and brushes (PME do a set of 5 brushes which have 3 detail brushes and 2 dusting brushes which is a good starter), palette knife, small sharp knife, scalpel (no.11 blade), small sharp scissors, cutting wheel if you have one. (long rolling pin for covering cakes)  Apron, baby wipes, dish cloth and tea towel, kitchen roll, gloves if you prefer to wear them.

Polystyrene dummy for flowers/models  at least 6" wide with a box at least 10-12" tall to put the dummy in.

For flower courses also include: jem 12 a/b texture tool, pliers, florist wires and tape, PME spray glaze, grooved board or non stick flower work board, celpad or flower pad or your hand. Flower cutters will be listed next to the relevant week. PVA or Impex hi-tac non toxic glue fand nivea or cold porcelain work , or trex or PME petal base for sugar flowers..

Paste - I will be using Cold porcelain: Hearty soft deluxe and/or modena - please add white gouache/acrylic/oil paint if using just modena as it is translucent (it becomes opaque when the paint  or a small amount of hearty soft deluxe is added). Wilton winton oil paints Sap green is invaluable as a leaf base colour when colouring cold porcelain.

You are welcome to use sugar florist paste such as Squires kitchen or platinum, or sugarflex (I do not recommend pastes that say "flower and modelling").  

Colours: You are welcome to choose different appropriate colours for all courses, I will suggest what I will be using. 

In the flower groups you have the freedom to choose your colours but I will be making flowers the colour of the advertised fresh flowers.

We will be making lovely flowers this term. We will work again with air drying clay (cold porcelain), but you are welcome to use sugar florist paste if you wish.

13th September - Clematis - clematis petal cutter and veiner and leaf cutter (I will free hand cut using templates) and veiner (varieties to follow but not montana - will provide templates), Sugar city do a large set of two petal cutters, centre cutter and petal veiner, 26, 28g white wires, nile green florist tape, 

20th September -  Scabious -  Framar Scabious set or 1B Scabious/carnation cutter, plus centre mould and miniature cutter by sugar city or lobelia 428 for miniature flower around the centre or tinkertech lobelia cutter set of two  428 and 429 and separate centre mould (I have mondmohn centre moulds)

Catch up week

4th October - Astrantia - tinkertech 20mm 8 petal pointed daisy 106 and or 30mm or PME marguerite 27mm plunger cutter, micro stamen white matt, 26, 28g white wires, nile green florist tape, more info to follow as I experiment.

11th October  - Astrantia - as above to include dust colours, plum, lemon yellow, aubergine, moss/gooseberry, vine, dark/woodland/ green, 

18th October - Bouvardia - tinkertech or FMM Daphne cutter or Katy Sue ultimate filler flower mould, micro or mini matt white stamen, all purpose leaf veiner, or gentle rose leaf veiner, dust colours to include lemon yellow, moss green, dark or woodland green, plum, aubergine. Sap green oil paint if using cold porcelains or Spruce or gooseberry green if using sugar. Wires to include 26, 28, 30g white (or green only for leaves) nile green florist tape and London Pride  - stephanotis flower cutter or PME small calyx/jasmine, 28g white wire, micro seed head stamen, white and green coloured paste, yellow and plum for dots (can use fine pens or pin) 406 mini calyx cutter. dusts as bouvardia plus red.

2 weeks catch up incl half term - I will put the double bouvardia as an extra here.

8th November - Ranunculus - Blooms Ranunculus veiner or simliar (eg sugarcity poppy). Framar Ranunculus cutters or Small jubilee rose petal cutters plus FMM set of 5 rose petal cutters, 18g, 26, 28g  white wire, pliers, nile green florist tape, 

15th November - Ranunculus - as above

22nd November - double hellebore - Christmas rose lentern petal cutters set of 3 either Framar or Tinkertech. Christmas rose petal veiner eg  squires kitchen or use jem 12 a/b veining tool. small white or yellow seed head stamen, small pme daisy plunger cutter for quick method for green section, or individually form (preferred for better finish), free hand cut the leaf or use hellebore orientalis leaf cutter and squires kitchen veiner or all purpose leaf veiner, dust colours to include lemon yellow, plum, aubergine, red, moss/gooseberry, dark/woodland/foliage green.

29th November - double hellebore - as above

6th December - Assembly  and complete dusting.

Flower making can be really relaxing. Whether you are new to flowers or not, it is all about breaking down techniques and the air drying clay makes it a lot easier to learn as there are less breakages. I will be demonstrating using cold porcelain/air drying clay, you could use sugar if you wish.

13th September - Dog Rose - FMM briar rose petal cutter set, christmas rose petal veiner or rose petal veiner, or Jem 12 a/b veining tool. FMM rose leaf cutters or similar.  Briar rose leaf veiners or rose leaf veiner or all purpose. Micro/small seed head stamen in white or yellow, or small matt white stamen and semolina to make pollen. White and mid green coloured paste. Dust colours to include pink, plum, rose, lemon yellow, moss/gooseberry, dark/woodland/foliage green, aubergine,28, 30g white wires, nile green florist tape 

20th September - Dog Rose  - as above

Catch up week

4th October - corn flower - 2cm pointed 8 petal daisy cutter or alan dunn framar cornflower cutter 2cm 8 petals, or kimaforart cornflower petal cutter and veiner, miniature calyx clean cut (four on the one silver cutter), or jem five petal daisy  wheel (4cm round wheel cutter) or tinkertech 406  for the inner flower) or can make a pulled flower with PME 5/6 star tool, or can use a zig zag method with scalpel,  blue paste to start, cornflower and aubergine, violet, deep purple dust colour, plus moss/gooseberry green and dark/woodland/foliage green. sap/spruce/gooseberry green coloured paste, white and nile green florist tape, cornflower or poppy petal veiner, or use the jem 12 a/b veining tool. Thin daffodil/freesia  stamen (paint black), or I can show you how to make with fine wire and tape.  Wires to include 32/35, 30, 28, 26g white. nile green florist tape.

11th October  - corn flower - as above

18th October - corn flower - as above

2 weeks catch up incl half term 

8th November - yellow rose - FMM set of 5 rose petal cutters or similar. Detailed rose petal veiner or regular rose petal veiner and jem 12 a/b veining stick, small seed head stamen white or yellow, nile green florist tape, spoons or egg mould or flower cups to form petals, 26, 28g white wires. sap green cold porcelain or gooseberry/spruce green flowerpaste, FMM rose leaf cutters and rose leaf veiner or all purpose of own choice of brand, dust colours to include lemon yellow and  nutkin brown.

15th November - yellow rose -  as above and include dust colours such as lemon yellow, sunflower or tangerine, vine, moss/gooseberry, woodland/dark/foliage green. nile green florist tape

22nd November - forget me not - 1cm 5 petal round blossom cutter (could be plunger or metal). Sharp nose pointed tweezers, single veined leaf veiner, or can use dresden to vein, PME 5/6 star tool, blue colours to include petal blue, cornflower, lilac/violet (not lustre), white, moss/gooseberry and dark/woodland/foliage green, aubergine.  Or equivalent pastel colours for cold porcelain.

29th November - forget me not  - as above and nile green florist tape.  If you want hairy leaves on cold porcelain you can use static grass 0.5mm snow from serious-play.co.uk or can shave a fresh kiwi fruit with a safety razor for sugar flowers 

6th December - Assembly  and complete dusting.

This will be a mix subject group.  We will be making a pot of wild flowers with a scarecrow modelled figure added including poppy, daisy and wheat. The second half of the term will be making a hat box cake (using poly dummy), painted with cocoa butter painted flowers and an arrangement of Gerbera, rose buds and leaves.

Remember a polystyrene dummy to put your flowers in (6" or wider) and a box at least 12" tall (can you box extenders, but better to keep boxes that you may receive deliveries in over the summer)

14th September - Wheat - 32 or 35g white wire or buy a new pastry brush with pale beige natural bristles to cut up. cream paste/gel colour for your cold porcelain or flower paste. 20g white wire, white or beige florist tape and cream and brown dust colours.

21st September - Poppy  - Poppy Wild 547/548 (30mm) TinkerTech Two Cutters or 3cm tall single rose petal cutter. Poppy leaf cutter (and optional veiner) or gerbera/daisy leaf cutter by jem or you can use the templates provided.  small black seed head or matt stamens, or can buy white and paint black with black dust colour mixed with edible glaze or Culpitt dipping solution. 26, 28g white wires, nile green florist tape, black dust. Red gel/paste colour and poppy  or red dust colour. Poppy petal veiner such as Sugar City or can use the Jem 12 a/b veinint stick

Catch up week

5th October - Daisy -  45mm PME daisy plunger cutter with 12 petals, daisy centre stamp or mould or bring a sieve for a home made method. 18g white wire, strong pliers to cut and bend the wire. Small 2cm daisy cutter for the calyx. dust colours to include lemon yellow, moss/gooseberry green and aubergine. Flower paste or cold porcelain in white and mid green (sap green for cold porcelain or gooseberry/spruce for sugar). Former for the flower to rest in such as the orchard flower stand, or keep a cardboard apple/tangerine tray from the supermarket, or bring foil so that I can show you how to make a former in class.

12th October  - Scarecrow - up to 250g of Saracino pasta model (can buy white and colour with paste/gel colours), 24g wires, kebab skewers and white florist tape. Polystyrene dummy to hold the figure while you work or a 3" approximate plant pot filled with polystyrene or florist oasis or spare sugarpaste.  If you buy corn on the cob over the summer and there are hairs.  Dry them and keep the for class.

19th October - Scarecrow and assembly -  as above

2 weeks catch up incl half term 

9th November - Rose bud and leaves -  FMM set of 5 rose petal cutters and FMM set of 3 rose leaf cutters. All purpose leaf veiner or rose leaf veiner of your choice (make sure it is larger than your largest leaf cutter). Those that have made roses before can use a rose petal veiner. 18g white wire and strong pointed nose pliers. nile green florist tape, You can use 2-3cm poly rose cones or eggs (try artificialfloralsupplies.co.uk for cheapest egg option). Rose calyx cutter  min. 35mm

16th November - Gerbera/germini - orchard 35mm carnation cutter (or simple size fluted cookie cutter), PME plunger gerbera cutter 70mm with 16 petals or similar size. 18g wire and strong pliers to cut and bend. nile green florist tape. Smaller daisy cutter used for the daisy for the calyx. Can pre-colour paste to your chosen colour and add a little dust for detail. Choose from spring green centre or brown centre. Tweezers.

23rd November - Cover hat box dummy cake -  Either 6" wide by 4" tall or 8" wide by 4" tall dummy for the hat box. Sugarpaste can be "The sugarpaste" or Saracino pasta top, or Renshaw extra if you are covering with very thin 2-3mm paste.  Regular renshaw or supermarket brands will need to be rolled to 5mm thickness. Bring a long rolling pin and smoother. Flexi smoothers (can make your own using very thin plastic place mats cut to size).  If you usually use the cakes by carol sharp edge smoother, remember to bring your very large acrylic disk to turn it upside down. I will be demonstrating using a regular smoother and flexi smoother. pastry brush and ramequin for water or water in a spritzer bottle. Icing sugar shaker, 

30th November -  Cocoa butter painting - Edible cocoa butter such as squires kitchen or saracino. Small dinner plate or small round palette (aluminium or plastic) and breakfast bowl, collection of brushes from delicate fine detail brush up to a no.6 round/pointed acrylic brush, kitchen roll, scalpel, scribe or long pin

7th December - Calyx on gerbera and arrange flowers. - Daisy cutter used for daisy earlier in term, green coloured paste plus dust colours to include moss/gooseberry, dark/woodland green, aubergine. Florist tapes, pliers, posy pic approx 1cm diameter across the opening.

6th October - Gingko - Gingko leaf cutter and veiner eg Sugarcity.co.uk or Tinkertech and Squires Kitchen, 26, 28, 30g wires (can be white or green), dust colours to incl lemon yellow, moss green or gooseberry, woodland green or dark green, twig or brown and nile green florist tape

13th October  - Ivy - Standard shape ivy cutters such as orchard set of four, or Jem Baby Ivy set of four, L9, tinkertech variegated 440 to shape the middle colour section, both white and green coloured flower paste or cold porcelain, we will also use the same colours to paint as well as moss/gooseberry, dark/holly ivy/woodland green, aubergine and lemon yellow dust colours.  20, 26, 28, 30g wires  in white and both nile green florist tape and either beige or brown tape.

20th October - Colouring and assembling foliage - colours listed as above.

2 weeks catch up incl half term 

10th November - Calla-  Template will be provided or can use tinkertech 744-746 or jem single cutter. Can vein by hand or use FMM cutter and veiner set. 18g white wire, dried fine semolina to colour with dust. we will discuss colours through the term, but makes ure you have lemon yellow, moss or gooseberry green and aubergine.

24th November - Carnations - I will show two methods.  The all in one using Orchard or FMM round carnation cutters (medium size is okay if you only buy one) and individual petals using the Framar carnation/scabious 1B single petal cutter or the tinkertech 346 or alan dunn Framar set of three single petals. Micro or mini matt white stamens, Calyx can be a pulled calyx or use a 20-25mm petunia flower cutter. 30 and 24g white wires, nile green florist tape, flower colours to be discussed or to your choice plus spruce or gooseberry green flowerpaste or sap green cold porcelain.

1st December - Carnations  -,8th December - Assembling into corsage. -  dust colours to dust stems as used above plus florist tape and wire cutters.  Bracelet to attach the corsage to if for a wrist such as from artificial floral supplies.co.uk.  Corsage could be attached with a hat pin to clothing, or you can wire on a brooch fixing.
